Faqta

Anouk Binkhuysen’s journey into entrepreneurship is as dynamic as it is inspiring. She recalls the early days with a smile, saying, “It’s been a long time, but you’ve also taken quite a journey, moving through various phases…”.. As the founder of Faqta, her mission has always been clear: to create a platform that empowers the younger generation through innovative and relevant educational content. Reflecting on the initial spark that led to Faqta’s creation, she shares, “Our mission started with a clear dream: to provide children with educational content that is both engaging and relevant to their future”.

Manifesting a personal insight into the American Dream

“In the beginning, we had more ideas than money. I remember telling my co-founder, ‘Well, if we run out of cash, we can always sell lemonade at the local market.’ It was a joke… sort of.”

Anouk’s entrepreneurial path began with a simple yet powerful insight: the need to renew the process of learning and teaching sustainably. “I wanted to create something that could really make a difference in education, something that wasn’t just about the Dutch market but had the potential to be globally impactful,” Anouk explains. Her initial focus was on creating a significant impact within the Dutch educational system, but this vision soon expanded. “We started very locally, but the dream was always bigger—to influence education on a global scale,” she recalls.

Faqta’s mission evolved into developing a platform that supports teachers and facilitates thematic, integrated learning across different educational systems.

Despite having no prior entrepreneurial experience, Anouk managed to kick-start her vision with the help of the Startup Fund Utrecht, previously known as the Rabo Pre-seed Fund.

She remembers the early days of the program, stating, “It was a four-month period of work hard and play hard, and having been able to do that with small kids at home must say something about the energy”.

As Faqta continued to grow and gain recognition, Anouk’s efforts were noticed far beyond the Dutch borders. One of the pivotal moments in her journey came when she received an invitation to speak at Harvard University. “Getting that invitation was surreal. It was an acknowledgment of all the hard work and the impact Faqta was starting to make. To share our insights on such a prestigious platform was not just a milestone for the company but also a personal achievement,” Anouk recalls.

Learning from learning

Reflecting on her journey, Anouk offers three key pieces of advice she would give her younger self:

Prioritize profitability: “One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that profitability is more important than rapid growth. It’s easy to get caught up in securing funding and scaling quickly, but focusing on financial independence earlier would have been better,” Anouk advises.

Stay true to you: “Throughout the journey, there were many moments when external pressures could have pulled me away from the original mission. But I learned that sticking to my vision was crucial,” she reflects.

Lead with inspiration and clarity: Anouk realized the importance of being both a navigator and an inspirer for her team. “Especially in an impact-driven company like ours, it’s crucial to inspire the younger workforce while also guiding them. They want to make a societal footprint, but they still need direction,” she explains.

Why startup funding matters

For Anouk, securing pre-seed financing was a pivotal moment in Faqta’s development. “The fund was perfect for us because it allowed us to build and scale without the immediate pressure to turn a profit,” she recalls. This financial support enabled Faqta to focus on refining its product and expanding its reach during those crucial early stages.

Anouk’s decision to choose the fund was closely tied to her participation in the UtrechtInc. program. She explains, “The fund aligned with our values and provided the structure we needed during our early stages”.

The structured nature of the funding, combined with the program’s emphasis on mentoring and development, made it an ideal choice for her startup.

Reflecting on the experience of securing funding, Anouk says, “The most valuable knowledge I gained was about the importance of aligning your financial strategy with your long-term goals. It’s not just about getting money; it’s about finding the right partners who believe in your vision”.

The future of Faqta

Anouk’s journey with Faqta is far from over, and she’s already thinking about what comes next. “We’ve come a long way, but this is just the beginning. The world of education is constantly evolving, and we have to evolve with it. I’m excited about the future because there’s so much more we can do, so many more lives we can impact”. With a clear vision and a passion for making a difference, Anouk is ready to take Faqta to new heights. “The next challenge is scaling while staying true to our mission,” she says, “and I’m confident we’ll get there”.

As Anouk continues to innovate within the educational sector, she can’t help but share a laugh about the realities of balancing a startup with life at home. “You know, balancing a startup with young kids at home is like running a marathon while juggling—you’re always on the move, trying not to drop anything, and just hoping you’ll make it to the finish line,” she chuckles. Her lighthearted take on the challenges she’s faced adds a relatable touch to her story. It’s clear that Anouk’s journey is not just about business success; it’s also about finding that tricky balance between work and life. With a mix of perseverance, vision, and a good sense of humor, Anouk shows that anything is possible in the world of entrepreneurship—even crossing the Atlantic Ocean and landing in the United States.
